Winter League

Hi All .. As last year winner .. I presume I am therefore next years
organiser (ie this Winter) .. So can I start discussion please .. I've
liked the format the last few years but open to good suggestions and
offers of help with 'handicapping' and results keeping etc .. Anyone
like to pitch in ???

  • I'm happy to do results for you Dave. I'll send you all the results I've
gathered for the last few years to help with the handicapping.

  • Cheers Mike .. That's brilliant .. Please email to
    infoguideoutside@gmail.com .. Thanks :-)

  • Thanks Dave. We can discuss tomorrow night but I have a couple of suggestions. I am happy to flag / help flag the Appletreeworth one if that is on the Agenda again. See you soon

  • Cheers Richard ... see you Tuesday ... I think Appletreeworth will be on
    the menu ...

  • Ideas for 2014 Winter League .. basically i'm thinking same basic plan
as last year with slight alterations to dates ... which would be
    something like ..\
    Weds 1st Jan ... Po House .. 10:30 a.m.or 11 ??\
    Sun 5th Jan .. Appletreeworth .. 10 a.m.\
    Sun 19th Jan ... Birkrigg\
    Sun 2nd Feb .. RoanHead\
    Sun 23rd Feb .. Broughton\
Sun 2nd Mar .. Black Combe

Handicaps based on 2013 races (emphasis on Dunnerdale and Kirkby)\
There was suggestion of sharing the 'on the day' organisation around to
reduce the load on the overall organiser (me!) ?? .. that would
    certainly help me !

    Any other thoughts ??

    :cool::cool:

  • I'd recommend 2pm for Po House on past performance, so maybe 11am would be better.

How about 10:30 for the rest?

Hazel & I can organise one of them Dave.

  • The first four dates I would agree with....and last year (2013) all start times were 10:30.
In the past only Po House has been 10:30 with the other five WTL fixtures from 10am depending on your handicap.

The next two may cause slight headaches if they are kept as they are.

Broughton Cross Country ought to be on the 9th Feb...the corresponding Sunday to 2013, after a 9.5m high spring tide had put pay to a 6 mile run on Walney which I believe was the original plan.

Roanhead this year on the 2nd is fine as the high tide that day is at lunchtime and should'nt get in the way of the route based on the 2013 race even though runners will see the sea advancing closer towards them....especially on the second lap.

Here's the big no no (if your'e a road runner that is)....Black Combe on the 2nd March.
That date is the same as the Haweswater half marathon which we usually (but not always) put in the club champs road races.

23rd Feb might be the better date but even that Sunday sees a 10 mile road race take place in Maryport, whilst the 16th is the Keswick/Buttermere Round 34km road race....most years this toughie is put in our champs to kick it off, so thanks for avoiding that date for a WTL race.

I should point out that the 30th Anniversary Dentdale 14.3 mile road race....a regular event put in our champs.....will clash with the Black Combe fell race from Silecroft, and irrespective of whether it's in the champs or not, I'm sorry I won't be available to help that day....kind of banking on Black Combe being on the 1st, which was the same weekend as 2013.

  • Oops. Maybe I should move Black Combe? The 1st was a candidate too but
the farmer hates it when the race is early as it falls right in the
    middle of his lambing.

Dave, I can set up Birkrigg for you if you like.

  • Pete and Will .. Thanks for volunteering \
Karl ... Thanks for all the excellent info\
I was avoiding 9th and 16th for purely personal reasons as Claire and I
are away on hols those dates .. So we won't be here to co-ordinate
anything ... if we have to use one or both of those dates .. and a n
others are free to run the show .. Then that will be fine of course ..\
    Cheers\
    Dave W

  • We need to keep the farmers on side, especially with hiccups in the past, we must avoid the lambing period

  • Well, the lambing is quite long and the 8th is quite early too. He wants
me to run the race at the end of the month but I've explained that would
    be no fun.

Dent are promoting the event quite energetically and the FRA calendar is
just being typeset now, so I've moved the Combe to the 1st.

  • experimentally .. who if anyone can see this ? .. you might need to be
using Strava (which is good anyway) .. it's the route of the Birkrigg
WTL which I ran this afternoon ..

  • Nice one Dave, but I understand it's two laps we have to complete on the WTL, but at least it tells you everything you need to know.

  • Nice one Dave, but I understand it's two laps we have to complete on the WTL, but at least it tells you everything you need to know.

  • As I recall there were some major short cuts through the woods last
year. I inadvertently took one but was caught out by Dave P and I and
Matt went back to the correct route but some others got away with it. We
will need to make sure this is properly policed this year!

  • Pete T has volunteered to be the police .. .. and i'll make sure
    it's well signed ..

And, Yes, Karl it's two laps of this route ..

  • Dave,\
Given that the actual Black Combe Fell Race is on the 1st March, when is
the BC winterleague race going to be?\
    I've put t'others in the calendar.\
    Sue

  • OK ... following the comments above there is a small problem .. how to
fit in the Black Combe WTL race .. i think it wouldn't be good to do it
the day after our (moved) BC FRA Fell Race (1st march) .. or the day
after the Dent 14 (in our road race series ) .... so i'm going to move
it to Sun 16th March .. so the dates and times would be ...

Weds 1st Jan Po House .. 11 a.m. .. an extra 1/2 hour recovery for NYE
    revellers !!\
    Sun 5th Jan .. Appletreeworth .. 10:30 a.m.\
    Sun 19th Jan Birkrigg 10:30 a.m.\
    Sun 2nd Feb .. RoanHead 10:30 a.m.\
    Sun 23rd Feb .. Broughton 10:30 a.m.\
    Sun 16th Mar .. Black Combe 10:30 a.m.

That OK with most folks ??\

  • Note .. just read suggestion re this event being included or an as
alternative (to Broughton route) in WTL series ... see other threads and
    comments please ..

  • Righty Ho ... following various discussions ... there is an EXTRA event
in the WTL this year ...

Tues 24th Dec ... Twa Hills (Ulverston) ... meet at The Gill, Ulverston
13:30 pm .... Mike H will do Handicaps .. Mike V is the course planner
.. for this hilly race which goes up Flan Hill, then up Hoad and up back
up Flan and back to the Gill !!

Weds 1st Jan Po House .. 11 a.m. .. an extra 1/2 hour recovery for NYE
    revellers !!\
    Sun 5th Jan .. Appletreeworth .. 10:30 a.m.\
    Sun 19th Jan Birkrigg 10:30 a.m.\
    Sun 2nd Feb .. RoanHead 10:30 a.m.\
    Sun 23rd Feb .. Broughton 10:30 a.m.\
    Sun 16th Mar .. Black Combe 10:30 a.m.

The rules are very simple \
    1. You must complete a minimum of 4 events (out of the 7) to qualify ..\
2, you must be a BCR club member (2014) to qualify (social membership is
    fine) ..\
    3. Handicapping will be as devised by Mike \ Dave .. with any
adjustments we think are required ! .. Bribes will be accepted .. but
    won't make any difference

Let's get it done and make it the best yet !!

  • sorry .. that should say 'Mike McI will do handicaps' (and it means for
the additional event .. he's already sorted the baseline for the usual
    six ... ) cheers

  • I'll flag the descent off hoad and flan.

Dave, do you have a photocopier in your shop?

    M

  • Cheers Mike ... Yes ... just drop it in if i'm not there ....

  • Checking the tide times which forced a proposed WTL race on Walney this year (2013) to be cancelled and replaced by the Broughton Cross Country instead could play a part in one of this season's races.....though it's not that bad....read on:

On Sun 2nd Feb we have Roanhead wtl....the tide might have other ideas as it's the highest daylight tide of 2014, due at 12:59, 10.1m...higher than the one that put pay to that Walney run. On my calculations if we stick with this race at the 10:30 starting time, runners doing the second lap of this two lap course may get cut off by the advancing waters, especially the faster members who may have to wait until close to 11am before they set off on the handicapping starts.

My suggestion is we either a) swap Roanhead with Broughton and move this dune and beach run to the 23rd when the tide will be out...bringing the cross country forward to the 2nd, or b) start this event at least 30 and ideally up to 60 minutes earlier if you wish to leave the dates as they are.

    I'll await your verdicts.

  • It's fantastic that we have a Tide expert in the Club ... Thanks Karl

The simplest idea is as Karl suggests .. swop Roanhead with Broughton
... so that makes it ...

  • 1st event Tomorrow .. Christmas Eve .. 1:30 from The Gill Ulverston ...
route by Mike Vogler .... handicaps by Mike McI ... and map (hopefully
below!) by me .. there will be a briefing on the route and canes to
    indicate the Hoad loop ..

  • map might be here ...

  • Have a great start to WTL 2013/14 - afraid I shall be working as a little elf in food retail land - hope all goes well and folk aren't blown off top of Hoad and Flan

    Happy running

  • Results from our first race, the Flan and Hoad Dash, are attached.

Congratulations go to Paul Kingsnorth for not letting on that I'd given
    him a rather "generous" handicap.

First lady back, in fifth place overall, was Helen Walker.

We're not quite sure where James went but we do think he visited the
    correct number of hills.

    See you at Po House.

  • Nice one Mikes ... there will be handicap tweaks for New Years Day I
suggest ! As I couldn't run today due to Claire being poorly .. I might
have a go over next few days . See you all New Years Day :-)
